Rhetorical
Analysis
Draft 1
(10/8/14)
Peer Reviews:
With the help of my peers, I made changes to my rhetorical analysis project such as adding why I chose the quotes to the left, including the exigence and whether it appeals to logos, pathos, or ethos, and including constraints.
1. Hunter Gwin (10/12/14):
Berkley, I think that in your post you did a great job of relating the project to our text with all the right quotes. I do however think that you should add a part on exigencies and the other things included on the rubric like audiences and stuff of that sort. Other than that I loved the way you chose to use a poster rather than something else and its a great way to get the point across.
2. Sierra Seldin (10/12/14):
Berkley, I see that you explained the issue of the discussion (whether or not marijuana should be legalized) and the date and time of the debate you are holding. The major claim or purpose of the text is “to allow people to gain knowledge on this particular conflict by observing a debate with the intent that students will start thinking about problems from different perspectives.” I think that is a very good purpose and it shouldn’t be changed. I see that you put quotes on the side of your board, but I would explain why you chose those quotes. I see that you included the audience, purpose, and a visual analysis, but I would also include the exigence and whether it appeals to logos, pathos, or ethos. The way you did your project is creative because it shows that students will have a better understanding of marijuana after the debate. I see that you included your sources, which is good, but like I said, explain the quotes and why you chose each one. I would say that you went with the way Haas and Flower explained how to do the rhetorical analysis, but just include a few other things like the exigence and constraints. The way you wrote your rhetorical analysis certainly helps to make an argument about the text because a debate is an argument. I definitely think you should continue with this format, just try to add some of the things I mentioned above.
3. Hunter Holland (10/13/14):
Dear Berkley, I like that you used a poster to inform us with information about when and where the debate is going to happen. When I look at this project it really catches my eye. The images and presentation of the project was very good. But you might need a little more info, yes you had some quotes from the book but it doesn't really give me any background on the topic being told. Besides that you did a very good job.
Rhetorical Analysis Final Draft (10/12/14):
Rhetorical Analysis Discussion Posts By Peers:
Caroline related Carroll's reading to advertisements by including that we mindlessly buy goods without thinking. I like how she told how advertisements persuade people by telling them that a particular product is what they need. The advertisement in my rhetorical analysis project convinces viewers to attend the debate because there are people out there that genuinely care about the argument.
Marley mentioned that examples of rhetoric are everywhere. I like how she explained her perspective by telling about her experience with a speech she told about Rosen College of Hospitality Management. She gave me a better understanding of rhetoric by including the exigence, audience, and constraints. It took me a while to fully understand these concepts while including them in my rhetorical analysis project.

Rhetorical Analysis Reflection:
I feel like we did not have the option to write a traditional paper in attempt to avoid unoriginality. I feel like without using a basic outline, we got a better understanding to the topic. We were supposed to analyze an advertisement in a different way from how we usually analyze texts. I was supposed to learn the concept of a rhetorical analysis and get a better understanding of how to make one. Learning goals consisted of the elements of rhetorical analysis, major claim and context about the text being analyzed, and how to present a rhetorical analysis. I am proud to say that I learned many effective strategies on how to write a rhetorical analysis. I can take a text, such as an advertisement, and find elements of rhetorical analysis such as exigence and constraints. I found it easy to define the purpose of my advertisement and how the writer of the text strived to get the attention of the intended audience. I found it difficult to include of ethos, pathos, and logos, but with the support of different authors, such as Porter, I developed a better understanding. I had trouble getting myself to begin this project because I was worried about not having the option of a traditional paper. While submitting my final draft, I felt a little uneasy. I felt like I included everything in the guidelines but wasn't completely sure on how the project was supposed to be done. I feel like without the traditional paper option, I got a little confused. But after doing a rhetorical analysis on an advertisement, I feel like I gained knowledge on this topic.
